Miami Twp. police giving residents hints on where speed traps are located

As unusual as it sounds, police in one community are now giving people a heads up about speed traps as a new tactic to help make neighborhood streets safer.

News Center 7's Sean Cudahy told us how this new tactic works and why neighbors would like to see more of it.

When police post up to do their normal speed enforcement, they take a picture with their phone and post it on Facebook to get people to guess where they are.

In doing this, many residents are telling police to come to their neighborhoods.

“You know, there’s kids in the neighborhood that people don’t look out for,” Megan Conrad, a Miami Township resident said. “Makes you nervous to let them play out front, just noticing people are going to speed on through.”

Conrad, who lives on Miami Village Drive, says she has noticed how fast people speed, and hope they slow down.

“Obviously the neighbors know to keep it at that 25 mile per hour, but other people don’t seem to care.”

This new tactic started last week, and departments hope it will help.

“We know the hot spots and we’re learning new ones from residents,” Miami Twp. Police Department Officer Pat McCord said. “It’s not about writing tickets, it’s about letting the residents know that we’re out there working for them, we’re in their neighborhoods, we’re trying to keep the neighborhoods safe, the roadways safe, and gain compliance with the law, all at the same time.”
