Man, 77, exits house firing at police; they find him dead there hours later

A 77-year-old man is believed to have shot himself to death after firing a handgun at police twice outside his home Wednesday during some kind of domestic incident, Indiana State Police said.

ISP SWAT found Leslie Odier, deceased, in his home on County Road 700 South, near the town of Lewisville, about 34 miles west of Richmond.

Henry County Sheriff's deputies had been called to the home about 7 p.m. Wednesday for a domestic situation between an elderly man and his wife, ISP officials said.

As deputies arrived, an elderly male armed with handguns came out of the house, fired shots and went back inside.

His wife was able to leave before deputies arrived, ISP officials said.

Henry County SWAT arrived on scene to assist deputies.

At some point, the man exited the home a second time -- pointing and firing a handgun at deputies. They returned fire. He fled back inside and officers said a short time later they heard a single gunshot from inside the home.

ISP SWAT and ISP negotiators made numerous failed attempts to contact the man. They went in about 11 p.m. and found Odier deceased.

The Henry County Sheriff’s Department has asked the ISP Pendleton District to take over the investigation, which is continuing.

An autopsy will determine Odier’s cause of death, ISP officials said.
