UPDATE @ 5:20 p.m. As many as six cars caught fire inside the A & B Iron & Metal recycling center, Dayton Fire District Chief Adam Landis said.
There were no injuries.
Crews dispatched initially on a report of a car fire found the flames in a large pile of metal, formerly cars, being processed to be recycled. All of the fluids are drained from vehicles before they are brought to the facility, the district chief said.
Explosions reported by passers-by and people near the facility probably were the tires from the vehicles, Landis said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, he said, and city inspectors will come in and evaluate before operations can continue.
There was no damage to Roger Glass stadium at Chaminade Julienne High School, which is next door to the recycling business, but all evening activities scheduled to take place at the high school facility this evening have been canceled.
We are hearing reports of a large trash fire at A and B Iron & Metal, a scrap yard located in the 300 block of Washington Street in Dayton.
Washington and Perry streets have been closed as firefighter work to extinguish the blaze.
We have a crew on the way, and we’ll bring you the latest information as it becomes available.
