MASON — Kings Island evacuated guests from one of its roller coasters today after the ride unexpectedly stopped.
The Beast came to a halt around 11 a.m. while climbing its second lift hill, said Kings Island spokesman Don Helbig.
Thirty riders waited about 10 minutes before being escorted off the ride, Helbig said.
The ride, which is the world’s longest wooden roller coaster, stopped when a device on the coaster intended to keep cars separated detected a problem.
“Roller coasters have block systems,” he said. “Trains in front have to clear a block before the train behind it can be released past certain points. A train will occasionally stop on a lift hill waiting for the train in front to clear its block and then re-start.”
In this instance, the system wouldn’t allow the ride to re-start, Helbig said.
The ride reopened around 12:30 p.m., he said.
