Indiana state trooper pulls woman from submerged car

SEYMOUR, Indiana — An Indiana State Police trooper jumped into water Friday afternoon and used a hammer to rescue a woman trapped inside her sinking car.

Sgt. Stephen Wheeles was assisting another officer with an accident investigation when he heard a call about a crash with possibly injuries on state Route 11 near County Road 800 East in Jackson County, north of Seymour, according to a release.

Seymour is about 150 miles from Dayton.

When Wheeles arrived, the car was “partially submerged in water and sinking,” with its driver, 23-year-old Megan Fleetwood of Jeffersonville, Ind., was trapped inside, police said.

Another person at the crash scene gave Wheeles a hammer, which he used to bust out the back window so he could pull Fleetwood to safety.

Wheeles suffered injuries to his hand and arm during the rescue.

He and Fleetwood were taken to Schneck Medical Center in Seymour for treatment.
