A two-vehicle crash Thursday afternoon that shut down State Route 72 (Springfield Jamestown Road) for five hours and sent three people to area hospitals remains under investigation, the Ohio Highway Patrol said.

Officials with the Springfield post said the accident on southbound 72 at East Jackson Road occurred about 2:45 p.m. when a 2000 Pontiac Grand Am rear-ended a 2006 Dodge Ram 2500 pickup. The impact sent both vehicles off the left side of the road and the Grand Am into a utility pole, the OSP said in a statement released Thursday evening.

The driver of the Grand Am, Todd Barger, 49; front seat passenger Joshua Barger, 27, and right rear passenger Alex Elswick, 21, had to be extricated from the car. All are from Enon.

Robert Riegel, 49, of Springfield, who was driving the Dodge Ram, was treated at the scene.
