Humane Society of Greater Dayton construction continues

DAYTON — Construction continues on the expansion at the Humane Society of Greater Dayton.

President and CEO of the Humane Society of Greater Dayton, Brian Weltge met with our crews to talk about the expansion.

Weltge tells us that one of the wings they are putting in is a full-service hospital that is “going to serve the under-served of our community.”

The hospital will be for pets of families and individuals who don’t have access to veterinary care.

“We consider pets that people own family members... and we want to make sure they have access to veterinary care just like all the other pets in our community,” Weltge said.

He tells us that all pet owners will be able to come to the hospital and get services for their pets based on need.

They are also putting in a high-volume spay-neuter clinic. Currently, they are doing around 4,000 spay and neuter surgeries a year.

Weltge explained that with this expansion over time they will be able to increase the number of spay and neuter surgeries to about 20,000 a year.

That may be a couple of years away but the building they’re putting together will be done by July.

They are also building a cruelty neglect rehabilitation center.

“The Humane Society is the only organization who works with all kinds of animals,” said Weltge.

This wing will be focused on rehabilitating all types of animals around the community including exotic and farm animals.

The Humane Society of Greater Dayton is a non-profit organization that Weltge said, “we’re lucky to have such a supportive community that we can do this sort of construction that benefit animals and people in our community.
