HUBER HEIGHTS — A Huber Heights man was expecting to start off his post-college life with $180,000 of debt, but at his Morehouse College graduation ceremony, the commencement speaker pledged to pay for every graduates’ education.
Steven Anderson, who graduated from Wayne High School in 2015, knew the financial investment that Morehouse College would be, but four years later, he doesn’t have to worry about that anymore.
“Suddenly we hear that all our loans are going to be paid off,” he said. “I am just truly grateful.”
Billionaire Robert Smith received an honorary doctorate from the historically black all male college in Atlanta last Sunday, where he also promised nearly 400 students that he’d pay off their estimated $40 million debt.
“I felt a sense of freedom because I know that I was free to make choices out of purpose and not out of fear of paying back my student loans,” Anderson said. “I can really look at my life and think what do I want to do. My main passions are public service, public police, communication, and I’m excited to have a career in that.”
Anderson says he is grateful and plans to pay it forward.
