How to protect your pumpkins from the cold weather

MIAMI VALLEY — The approaching cold weather this weekend could mean trouble for many fall decorations. With chilly temperatures expected to linger, pumpkins and other fall plants could have a hard time thriving or even surviving.

News Center 7’s Gabrielle Enright has you covered though, as she spoke with a local pumpkin farmer about what steps you can take to fight back against the frost.

According to Glenn Monnin of the locally owned Monnin Fruit Farms, even a little frost on the top of pumpkins can cause them to deteriorate. Monnin recommends covering up your pumpkins and mums during chilly  nights or bringing them inside when you know a freeze is coming. You can cover your pumpkins and plants with an inverted flower pot or bucket to help detour the cold weather.

Monnin says even though some of the picking season was sped up due to the earlier hot and humid weather, he still has pumpkins in the patch for people to pick their own and experience a beautiful fall tradition.
