1 taken to hospital, 2 others injured after trying to extinguish grease fire in West Carrollton

WEST CARROLLTON — One person was taken to the hospital and two others were injured after trying to extinguish a grease fire in West Carrollton Tuesday.

Firefighters were called to a home in the 600 block of Peach Orchard Drive around 6:20 p.m. to reports of a grease fire, according to West Carrollton Fire Chief Chris Barnett.

Fire crews arrived on the scene to find heavy smoke and fire coming from the kitchen of the house.

Barnett said people in the home were cooking on the stove when the grease in the pan caught fire, ultimately catching the kitchen on fire.

The people attempted to put the fire out by picking up the pan and taking it outside when they dropped the pan, causing the fire to spread.

The person handling the pan suffered first and second-degree burns and was taken to the hospital, the other two suffered minor smoke inhalation.

If you find yourself in this situation Barnett recommends putting a lid back on the grease fire or using a fire extinguisher.

“We are in the holiday season and we want to make sure everyone is safe. If you do have a fire please try not to put it out by taking the pan of grease or whatever that’s on fire on the stove out the door... also we want to make sure people have working smoke detectors in their homes,” Barnett said.

Barnett said the people in the home attempted to use a fire extinguisher but it was not working. He also said the home only had one smoke detector in the hallway which was not going off when crews arrived.

He recommends having smoke detectors in the hallway and all of the bedrooms of your home.
