Greene County voters to decide on sales tax hike to fund new jail

XENIA — Greene County commissioners voted this morning to place a sales tax increase to fund a new jail on the March ballot.

The 3-0 decision means voters will be asked on March 17 whether to raise the county sales tax a quarter percent for a period of 12 years.

New revenue is needed to fund the building of a new jail and sheriff’s office, a project estimated at $60 million, county officials have said.

The plan is to build a new 500-bed facility next to the county’s juvenile justice center and across from the Greene County Adult Detention Center on Greene Way Boulevard on the west side of Xenia.

Operations of the current jail and the sheriff’s office in downtown Xenia would be moved to the new facility.
