Girl Scouts find new ways to sell cookies during pandemic

DAYTON — Girl Scout cookie sales are getting ready to ramp up, but will look different compared to years past.

Troops are getting more creative to try and come up with new ways to sell the cookies.

Because of social distancing and other mandates there will be fewer stands set up outside of stores as some usual spots have already decided not to host Girl Scout cookie stands.

There will be drive thru locations set up. The schedules are still being worked on to solidify some dates. Troops will also use door hangers that they will leave with a time set to come back if that person wants to place an order for some cookies.

Trying to become more creative is something that tests Girl Scouts as they deal with all the different restrictions.

“You can’t be out in public asking people, you have to wear a mask now, people can’t hear you very good because you’re wearing that,” Avrianna Conway said.

This is usually a busy and exciting time for Girl Scouts, but there will be a different kind of excitement in 2021.

“I’m personally looking forward to is hopefully seeing my fellow girl scouts from my troop,” Alexandria Schindler said.  “I haven’t seen them since March-ish because girl scouts shutdown during that time. They said listen up we can’t have you guys selling, we can’t have COVID cases.”

Most of us likely know the temptation of Girl Scout cookies, but we aren’t alone.

“It’s pretty hard though because every time I have to walk through my house we have a bunch of cookies sitting next to my couch,” Conway said.

Conway said her Troop 33415 hopes to have an overnight at a zoo with some of the proceeds from the sales. Schindler said that her Troop 33216 is looking at going camping and other outdoor activities with some of their proceeds.

There will be constantly updated information on the Girl Scouts of western Ohio website on where you can buy cookies. Check out the cookie finder at https://www.gswo.org/ for where and how you can buy cookies this year.

Schindler said if you see a Girl Scout be sure to buy some cookies since it will be harder than usual to sell their boxes.
