XENIA — The Xenia City Council introduced a resolution authorizing the sale of the former YMCA building on East Church Street to a holding entity representing Community STEAM Academy.

Since the city took ownership of the building two years ago, city council has been looking for what City Manager Brent Merriman called a “good fit” for the community.

The Community STEAM Academy Xenia would focus on science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics.

"We are partners with Xenia Community Schools and we will continue to be close partners. At the same time our council feels having educational options for our community is really valuable to make our community competitive for residents and businesses", said Merriman.

The approximately 42,000-square foot building is listed for sale at $52,500.

“That’s part of what is so exciting about this project. It doesn’t just offer additional educational opportunities for this community. It also expands our tax base and it’s taking a property, that the city was responsible for, and putting it back into private hands where it will be part of our tax base again”, said Merriman.

A second reading and vote on the resolution is expected at the council’s meeting Aug. 27.
