Dan Curran, the University of Dayton president emeritus, has been discharged from a Pennsylvania hospital following a liver transplant in April, the school announced Friday.

Curran, who stepped down in 2016 after a 14-year presidency, fought liver disease for more than a decade before the transplant.

Curran’s family said the former president “is doing well and is getting stronger every day.”

“Dr. Dan and his family express their deepest thanks to the UD community for the prayers, emails, cards, drawings and outpouring of support,” the school said in a statement. “These expressions of concern, caring and encouragement buoyed Dan’s spirits and no doubt played a major role in his healing.”

The university also publicly revealed for the first time where Curran received medical care, noting Curran’s “deep gratitude and appreciation” for the staff at the Penn Transplant Institute at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and the Magee Rehabilitation Hospital.

“Dan and his family ask for continued prayers of gratitude and condolence for the donor and the donor’s family. And Dan is looking forward to coming back to campus in the not-too-distant future to say thank you in person,” the school’s statement said.

Curran, whose tenure expanded not only the school’s physical footprint but also his persona as a crowd-surfing bon vivant with a sharp understanding of marketing and academia, is one of three living UD presidents. Also living are Bro. Ray Fitz, a vowed Marianist and Curran’s predecessor, and incumbent Eric Spina, who assumed the school’s presidency in summer 2016 when Curran stepped down.

UD continues to encourage well-wishers to email Curran at President18@udayton.edu.
