Woman crawls back inside burning house to rescue her dog in Dayton

One woman was taken to the hospital Tuesday after rescuing her dog from a fire at her house in Dayton.

Crews were dispatched around 3:20 p.m. to the 2100 block of Moreland Avenue and found heavy smoke coming from the back bedroom when they arrived, Dayton Fire Battalion Chief Fred Haney.

Crews were able to the get the fire knocked down quickly.

Initial reports indicated a resident and her dog were out of the house when the fire happened. However, neighbors said the woman went back inside the house, crawling on her hands and knees, to rescue her dog.

She was taken to Miami Valley Hospital in fair condition after suffering some burns to her legs and smoke inhalation.

Haney said the fire is believed to have been caused by the resident burning some unattended incense that caught something, possibly curtains, in the bedroom on fire.

The estimated damage is around $20,000. The American Red Cross will be called as the house is inhabitable.
