Dayton firefighters investigating after destructive, ‘suspicious’ garage fire

A fire in the 100 block of Linsan Court destroyed one garage and damaged another, after firefighters were delayed by a downed electrical wire and difficulties getting engines to the fire, according to Dayton Fire Capt. Fred Haney.

Haney said that when fire engines responded to the fire around 5:35 a.m., they had trouble maneuvering onto Linsan Court, which had cars parked on both sides of the street.

One engine even struck a parked car.

However, when fire crews arrived at the fire, they found that one garage was engulfed, to the point where it was starting to collapse. The fire had started to spread to the next garage as well.

Crews couldn’t fight the flames immediately, though, as a power line was damaged by the fire and came down on top of the second garage. Firefighters had to wait for Dayton Power & Light crews to arrive and shut down power to the wire before they could extinguish the flames.

Nobody was injured, Haney said, but the fire is deemed suspicious. The main reason is that there have been several garage fires lately, particularly in east Dayton. In addition, Haney said, the time of day for the fire and the fact that the garage had been secure prior to the fire seemed suspicious.

Investigators are now looking for the cause of the fire.
