WASHINGTON — The co-chair of John Kasich’s presidential campaign in Colorado said Sunday she would endorse Florida Sen. Marco Rubio for president, officials close to the Rubio campaign said.
B.J. Nikkel, a former state representative in Colorado who had been named last October as one of two chairs of Kasich’s effort in the state, said in a statement Kasich “is a fine man and leader, but it’s time for conservatives of conscience to rally behind the one man” who can defeat New York billionaire Donald Trump for the GOP nomination and win the November election.
Rubio finished second to Trump in Saturday’s South Carolina Republican primary, far ahead of Kasich who finished fifth. With former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush dropping out of the race, Republican establishment donors and political figures are expressing greater interest in uniting behind Rubio.
