Electrical issue blamed for house fire on Poppa Drive in Dayton

An electrical issue is being blamed for a house fire on Poppa Drive that displaced the residents and their pets.

Dayton fire crews found heavy fire on the exterior of the home in the 4900 block of Poppa Drive and later found that the flames had spread to the attic, where there is an overhang, Capt. Mike Fasnacht said.

Crews were dispatched about 3:40 p.m. on a report of possible structure fire with flames through the roof.

Flames spread through the attic and caused extensive damage there, he said. A fire department investigator determined that the fire started in the attic and flames picked up on the wood exterior of the home. That outside fire fed the main fire and spread into debris and brush in the yard, the captain said.

The residents, their cat and dog all were able to get out of the house safely.

High winds in the area (the Miami Valley has been under a wind advisory all day) were a distraction but played no role in spreading the flames, Fasnacht said. The advisory is to expire at 6 p.m., according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington.

He estimated the damage to the structure and contents at $30,000 to $40,000.

A Huber Heights fire crew assisted the Dayton crew, the captain said.
