Drugs discovered in bike chase

DAYTON — A bike and foot chase resulted with one in custody after an officer discovered suspected drugs on the man.

Lawerence Johnson Jr., 39, was detained in the Montgomery County Jail on suspicion of possession of drugs, obstructing official business and advertising and possession.

A Dayton police officer was on patrol around 1:45 a.m. Monday when he noticed a male riding a bike without a rear red bike light on East Third Street, read the report.

When the officer attempted to make contact with the man, the suspect reportedly fled on the bike.

The officer continued to follow the man onto South Van Lear Street and down an alley, according to the report.

The man reportedly got off the bike and continued to flee on foot after an unknown malfunction with the bike.

The officer caught the man after crossing Sander Court, read the report. The suspect fell, reportedly causing minor scrapes on his elbows and knees.

The officer handcuffed the male and asked if he had anything on him, according to the report. The man reportedly said he had a pipe for smoking methamphetamine in his pocket.

While searching the suspect, the office also located a baggie in a pack of cigarettes with a hard, glass-like substance in it, read the report.

The man reportedly said the substance was methamphetamine for his girlfriend. He also said he attempted to run because he has a warrant, according to the report.

The officer reported that there was no such warrant.
