Drowning scare on icy pond prompts emergency response

GERMAN TWP., Champaign County — A report of a possible drowning after a person found what they believed to be footprints and a hole in the ice prompted an emergency response this morning in Champaign County

Investigators determined a deer, not a person, had fallen through the ice and drowned, according to firefighters.

The call came out around 9:50 a.m. in the 3900 block of Storms Creek Road.

Firefighters used a boat to go onto the ice to check the incident and found the deer floating underneath the ice.
