Detectives compare notes on rash of break-ins in Dayton, Harrison Twp.

DAYTON — Detectives from the area’s two largest police agencies are comparing notes on a rash of business break-ins that began over the weekend.

Some of the crime spree, which led to extensive damages at restaurants and retail stores, was captured on surveillance video.

Church’s Chicken near Hoover and Gettysburg avenues was among the businesses targeted. Its drive-through window was smashed Saturday night into Sunday morning. Video showed a man enter the eatery through the window and then immediately start looking for cash.

Employees said they thought it was an isolated case until Tuesday morning. That’s when another Church’s up the street had its drive-through window smashed, too, during a similar break-in.

Dayton police detectives are investigating many more business break-ins that happened Tuesday morning, including those at Domino’s and Dollar General on North Main Street and JJ Fish & Chicken on Salem Avenue.

Montgomery County Sheriff’s detectives took similar reports at a Lee’s Chicken in Harrison Twp. that also had its drive-through window broken.

Investigators are not saying whether the crimes are connected, but there are similarities: the restaurants had their drive-through windows smashed as the entry point; in most cases the culprit tried to access the safe; and in several cases the culprit had a backpack and tried to cover his face with what appears to be a white T-shirt.

Customers of the businesses targeted said crime hurts the businesses, and could come back on those who patronize them.

“It’s troubling,” said Kirisha Gibson. “It’s going to affect us all, really. They might have to raise prices.”
