Deadly officer-involved shooting another tragedy for Dayton, resident says

DAYTON — Less than a day after one person was killed during an officer-involved shooting, the doors of the Dayton Shell Station were open and customers were going about their day.

People who frequent the area told News Center 7’s Kayla Courvell that they weren’t surprised to hear what happened, but they want it to stop.

“I honestly was not really shocked,” said a man who only identified himself as Sumlin. “I was like, ‘Man another terrible situation that we have to deal with in our community.’”

Sumlin said he was born and raised in the city and that he’s been visiting a barbershop nearby for years.

“It’s just a tragedy to see constant crime and different things that are going on in our community that are bringing a dark shadow over Dayton,” he said. “This just brings another bad chapter for 2019. I pray for the family of the victim; I pray for the police officer.”

Another man familiar with the area, Donald Vanzant, also said he wasn’t surprised by the news.

“Not again,” he said. “There’s always something happening over there.”

While the news was unsettling for many, people who spend their time in the area said it won’t keep them away.

“I feel safe in my city,” said Sumlin. “I don’t allow events and things that have gone on to deter me from my everyday life.”
