A 2-year-old child is in intensive care and a man has been booked into the Montgomery County Jail on suspicion of endangering a child, Dayton police said Wednesday.

Andrew L. Nason, 27, was arrested Tuesday. Police Sgt. Larry Tolpin said investigators have been told Nason was in charge of supervising the toddler and a 5-month-old while the toddler’s mother was at work.

Nason was allegedly upstairs at a residence on East Bruce Avenue playing video games when he heard a bang downstairs, according to Tolpin. A box fan had fallen over and Nason said the child fell down a flight of stairs, according to Tolpin.

The 2-year-old’s injuries were significant, Tolpin said, noting on Wednesday afternoon that the child was in intensive care at Children’s Medical Center of Dayton. The medical center declined to release any information to News Center 7.

“The arrest was based upon preliminary probable cause, but we’re still investigating further,” Tolpin said.
