Dayton Children’s, Gem City Market partner for kid’s cooking challenge to inspire healthy eating

Four Dayton-area children, who are not experience in cooking, got a basket of surprise ingredients to come up with a dish.

The kids live in a section of the city referred to as a food desert, an area in which nutritious, affordable food is hard to find due to a lack of grocery stores.

This challenge is to show how easy it is to inspire kids to eat healthy when they have the right ingredients, read the release. It also shows how important it is for all children to have access to nutritious foods.

Some Dayton-area facts:

  • Dayton ranks as the second worst city in the nation for food hardship among households with children
  • About a third of families say they have a hard time getting healthy food
  • Roughly half of kids are overweight or obese, mostly due to eating the wrong types of foods
