Impaled semi driver who crashes on I-70 in Dayton loses leg in roadside amputation

UPDATE @ 7 p.m. (Sept. 2):

Azimov Ziyovaddin, a 32-year-old foreign national, has been confirmed as the driver of the semi-truck Saturday evening who crashed into a wall off the Airport Access Road on-ramp to Interstate 70.

In order to rescue Ziyovaddin from the vehicle, fire crews called an emergency surgical team to the roadside to amputate his leg that was impaled by a piece of metal below the knee.

Ohio State Highway Patrol Sgt. Frank Simmons Jr. said Ziyovaddin was in critical condition upon leaving the scene Saturday evening.

A semi-truck driver who crashed into a retaining wall off the Airport Access Road ramp onto I-70 Saturday evening had his leg amputated after becoming impaled by a piece of metal.

An emergency surgical team was called to the scene when fire crews determined they wouldn’t be able to extract him from the cab, Ohio State Highway Patrol Sgt. Frank Simmons Jr. confirmed.

The driver was transported by MedFlight to a local hospital and listed in stable condition.

Sgt. Simmons Jr. said speed and weather conditions caused the accident.

“The roadway was still wet and he was going way too fast for the curve,” Sgt. Simmons Jr. said. “The road conditions and curvature of that ramp were too much for that vehicle.”

OSP officials urge travelers to slow down while merging onto highways, especially when the roads are wet. Sgt. Simmons says accidents like this happen frequently in the area where I-70 and I-75 intersect.

“With the curvatures of these roadways it happens all the time.”

Sgt. Simmons said the driver will be cited for failure to control.

UPDATE @ 8:10 p.m.: 

The southbound ramp to I-70 EB at Airport Access Rd. has been shut down, Ohio State Highway Patrol confirmed.

MedFlight has arrived on scene.

UPDATE @ 7:28 p.m.:

The male driver of the semi has been impaled due to the crash, according to scanner traffic.

Crews are saying a metal seat rail pierced him below the knee, according to scanner traffic.

They are continuing the extraction.

Crews are on scene for a semi crash with entrapment near the Dayton International Airport, Ohio State Highway Patrol says.

The semi crashed into a wall on the Dayton International Airport Access Road ramp to I-70 EB around 6:30 p.m. Saturday.

The vehicle’s cargo is non-hazardous, and the ramp is closed, OSP said.

The condition of the driver is unknown. Crews stated it will be a lengthy extraction, according to scanner traffic.
