COVID-19 hospitalizations lowest since mid-November as curfew deadline approaches this week

The Ohio Hospital Association is reporting the lowest number of active hospitalizations and ICU admissions since mid-November, which is when the state was seeing a rapid increase of people being admitted for COVID-19.

Tuesday the organization reported 319 hospitalizations related to COVID-19 in the region that includes the majority of the Miami Valley. It is the lowest number since Nov. 10, when the region saw 302 active hospitalizations.

The statewide intensive care unit admissions also are on a downward trend, with the lowest number of patients reported in the ICU statewide since Nov. 16 on Tuesday.

The drops come as the statewide curfew is scheduled to expire on Saturday. The curfew was first issued on Nov. 19, when Ohio Department of Health Director Stephanie McCloud ordered Ohioans to stay home between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m., except for work, food, medical care or social services.

The order was extended twice as the state monitored the potential spike in cases and hospitalizations around Thanksgiving, Christmas and the New Year’s holiday. Data from the Ohio Department of Health shows there has been a consistent decline in cases since Jan. 7, when the state last reported over 10,000 coronavirus cases in a single day.

It is not clear if Gov. Mike DeWine will call on McCloud to extend the curfew.
