Montgomery County officials on Monday decided to cancel the spring 2020 funding cycle of the Economic Development and Government Equity Grant Program because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The ED/GE program is funded through sales tax revenue that will be significantly affected as a result of COVID-19. Montgomery County officials are taking a proactive approach to identify budget alternatives that will ensure residents receive the critical human services they need to recover.

“It was a difficult decision to cancel our spring ED/GE program, but I want to reassure the community that our team is still working hard to attract new businesses and retain local companies,” Chris Williams, Montgomery County assistant county administrator for business services, said in a prepared statement.

“We remain committed to investing in our local business community to help fuel our economy and provide employment opportunities for our citizens,”  Williams said.

The Board of County Commissioners anticipates the ED/GE program will resume for the fall 2020 funding cycle as scheduled.

Applications for the fall 2020 ED/GE Grant Program will still be due Nov. 1.

Montgomery County and its partners will continue to work with local businesses to identify resources that can assist them through their own COVID-19 recovery.

Strong businesses are a critical part of restoring the local economy and Montgomery County will continue to actively support them, county officials said.
