Complaint about emergency response in Mad River Twp. draws review

Officials in Mad River Twp. are confirming that a woman's complaint about a response to her 911 call for help in early January will undergo an independent review.

The woman said help arrived for her son, who was suffering from a medical issue, at least 40 minutes after she called 911 dispatch for the Mad River Twp./Enon Fire Department on Jan. 4. The woman brought her issue to the township trustees meeting Monday night.

Thursday, Fire Chief Tim Wendling told News Center 7's Kate Bartley the woman's 911 call went to a different fire department for a mutual aid response because the township's two medical units had responded to a vehicle accident.

Wendling also said a township employee with the fire department did respond to the woman's home. He was off-duty and had no medical equipment, the chief said.

Neither Wendling nor Township Trustee Kathy Estep gave a timetable for the review.

The investigation of the 911 response comes at a time when the township fire department is dealing with the resignation of as many as seven firefighter/paramedics and fire department employees in recent months.

Wendling told Bartley two people resigned Thursday, but hires have been made to replace the losses.

Estep said the resignations have been occurring during a transitional period, noting that people come and go whenever there is a change in leadership.

We will update this developing report as information becomes available.
