Centerville Schools back in classroom today with new safety protocols

CENTERVILLE — Centerville students are back in classrooms today after learning remote for the first quarter.

Students with last names beginning with A-K start class in-person today, and those with last names beginning with L-Z start Friday. All students will be back in class Monday. The district will be in class four days per week, with Wednesdays being used for cleaning.

When students arrive they will notice some major changes including plexiglass barriers, floor stickers, and signage for social distancing.

Each student will be given a chromebook, said Superintendent Tom Henderson.

“There won’t be any sharing of devices. We won’t have to worry about sanitizing those,” he said. “We don’t want this to happen, but should we have to pivot and do something different, like go remote, we will be prepared to do that.”

Clear plastic dividers and assigned seats will be used to visibly remind younger students to spread out while they eat. Middle and high school students will be able to practice social distancing without dividers.

“We have modified some of our scheduling at our middle school and high schools to be more of a block schedule, which reduced some of the classroom transitions as well,” Henderson said. “The students are still taking all of their classes, they’re just doing it in a slightly different way.”

In addition, age-appropriate stickers and signs are being used throughout the school buildings to remind students to practice physical distancing, wear their masks, and practice good hygiene. Hand sanitizer will be available in classrooms and common areas.
