Campaign to repair landscape damaged by Memorial Day tornadoes launches

MIAMI VALLEY — The Miami Valley Regional Planning Commission and the nonprofit organization RETREET launches the Miami Valley TREEcovery Campaign today. The campaign is a multi-year effort to to repair landscape that was previously damaged by the Memorial Day tornadoes in 2019.

The MVRPC is the designated leader of the Long-Term Community Disaster Recovery Network, according to MVRPC Executive Director Brian O. Martin. The network has helped areas impacted by the Memorial Day tornadoes.

“The next step recovery process is restoring the tree canopy in our disaster impacted neighborhoods,” Martin said in a press release.

The campaign’s goal is to plant at least 1,000 trees in neighborhoods impacted by the tornadoes over the next two years and is expected to cost at least $300,000.

Planting events are currently planned to follow the path of the tornadoes, moving west to east. The first plantings will take place in Trotwood, Brookville, Perry Township and Vandalia this fall.

Homeowners who lost trees in their yard can request a free tree to be planted in their yard at retreet.org/mvtc.
