Baby formula still scarce in the Miami Valley; How to make your supply more nutrient for your child

DAYTON — Parents are still having a hard time getting their hands on baby formula across the nation.

Most stores are limiting how much formula parents can purchase by three to four units at a time.

Even when parents actually get their hands on formula, it may not even last that long.

News Center Seven Kayla McDermott talked to a local pediatrician, William Spohn.

He said infants who need special formula, such as premature babies, are struggling because the formula they need is in the lowest supply.

This is making parents look for alternative ways to feed their kids.

Some may look at almond, oat, or cow milk as an alternative, but Spohn says those are not suitable options for infants.

“Whole milk can get an inflammation of their bowel, what we call colitis. And that can then lead to bleeding from the bowel. And that can lead to anemia,” said Spohn.

Spohn did go over some ways parents can extend their use of formula while giving their babies all the nutrients they need.

“To make it more calorically dense. You put in three scoops of powder to five and a half ounces of water,” Spohn explained.
