Election 2020: Separating voting myths from the truth

OHIO — From the Miami Valley to the rest of the state, election authorities are trying to set the record straight. They are trying to dispel myths that people hear and read about on the internet that undermine confidence in the system.

So the Ohio Association of Election Officials has set the web site OhioBallotFact.Org to list rumors and falsehoods and knock them down with the facts. Steve Harsman, Deputy Director of the Montgomery County Board of Elections said the number one myth about voting in Ohio is that absentee ballots are not counted unless an election is close. That is not true. In fact those votes are collected and tabulated first on election night.

Harsman said it is important to get the truth out to voters so they can feel confident in the voting process. “Especially in in a Presidential election, when you have a national election and you have different states operating under different rules and different parameters and they get confusing. And so that’s one of the things we are trying to isolate for Ohio, get that information out to Ohio voters and specifically Montgomery County voters and dispel those myths and provide good information,” Harsman said.
