DPD raising thousands for cancer charities

DAYTON — The Dayton Police Department is breaking protocol to allow its officer to give back.

This is the fifth year officers have the option to grow beards during October and November. Now, for the first time female officers have the option to wear a pink streak in their hair or sport pink nail polish.

Participating officers pay $50 per month. Then, the Fraternal Order of Police will donate that money to Miami Valley Cancer Foundation and Children’s Cancer Foundation.

“We all come in this line of work to give back, so whenever we can take a little bit to do that, whether it’s 50 bucks here or buying somebody food on the street, that’s what we’re here for,” Det. Steven Ettinger said.

This is the first year recruitment administrator Salli Jones has been able to fully participate. She died a streak of her hair pink.

“It’s really good for us to be able to give back to the community. The community has given a lot to us over the past year, so it’s really nice to be able to support those local charities that do so much good for our community,” Jones said.

This year, 106 officers are participating. The FOP anticipates being able to donate about $5,000 to each charity, more than in any other year.

“Our officers are people too and we give freely to the worthy causes and we’re just happy to raise money for these charities,” Jeffery Spires with the Fraternal Order of Police said.
