Man jumps from second floor window to escape massive Dayton house fire

DAYTON — Firefighters are investigating if arson was the cause of a massive fire that engulfed a house early Friday morning, which forced a man to jump from the second floor to escape the flames.

Crews were dispatched to the home in the first block of Great Miami Boulevard in Dayton around 2:30 a.m. after the blaze was reported. Firefighters reported the structure was completely engulfed in flames.

An occupant living in the house said another person on the second floor had to jump from a window and was caught by two bystanders who came to help. That person suffered minor injuries from the jump and was taken to an area hospital for treatment, firefighters said.

No other injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, however arson is being investigated as a possible factor, firefighters said. Someone had recently been evicted from the house prior to the fire, and could have been a motive for intentionally lighting the fire, according to investigators.

It was not known if investigators had officially identified any suspects.

The house has been deemed a total loss. Firefighters will be on scene throughout the morning extinguishing hot spots.

We’ll continue to update this story as we learn more.
