Suspect in Dayton double stabbing, police chase to be arraigned today

DAYTON — A Dayton man is scheduled to be arraigned today on charges stemming from a Sept. 24 double stabbing and a police chase the next day.

Jaryld Portis, 47, is being charged with four counts of felonious assault and two counts of aggravated robbery, according to court records. He reportedly attacked and robbed two men in a house on Pointview Avenue.

Prosecutors said in a court affidavit, “Mr. Portis lured the victims to the basement under the guise that there was a problem with a fuse box.”

Then, once both were in the basement, Portis reportedly hit both men in the head with an unknown object. During the attack one of the victims lost the tip of one finger, and both suffered severe lacerations, according to court documents.

About $1,100 was stolen in the incident, according to a police report.

Both men identified Portis as their attacker, and were taken to Miami Valley Hospital in critical condition.

At around 1:40 a.m. Sept. 25, an officer learned that he was near a car connected to an aggravated robbery. He tried to initiate a traffic stop near Helena Street and Riverside Drive, but the suspect, later identified as Portis, refused to stop.

A car chase began, finally ending after police used stop sticks, according to court documents, and then Portis ran on foot into the Great Miami River where he was caught.

Portis is currently in Montgomery County Jail, where he has been since his arrest.
