‘No overt threats’ found in suspicious package outside federal building, Dayton police say

DAYTON — UPDATE @ 11:45 p.m.

A suspicious package found Tuesday night outside the federal building in downtown Dayton contained “no overt threats,” Dayton police Lt. Jason Hall said.

Security personnel at the federal building found the package that had been dropped off at the front doors of the federal building, 200 W. Second St. They contacted Dayton police, which requested the bomb squad.

The mailer showed “classic signs of a suspicious package: improperly addressed, ambiguous return address, oversized, no postage,” Hall said.

Once the bomb squad determined there was no hazard, they opened it.

“It was determined to contain a note and a couple, small innocuous items. There were no overt threats,” said the lieutenant, who would not specify what items were inside nor what the note said.

Hall said he will follow up with the U.S. Marshals Service, which is responsible for the safety and security of the federal building.

Security personnel reported finding a suspicious package Tuesday night outside an employee entrance door to the federal building downtown.

The package was found shortly before 9 p.m. at the building, 200 W. Second St.

It was described as a brown envelope with a bulge addressed to U.S. District Courtroom 712, and it was sealed inside a large resealable plastic storage bag, according to the Montgomery County Regional Dispatch Center. The district court’s website identifies Room 712 as the Office of the Clerk.

Dayton’s Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse is located in the city’s central business district and is home to the U.S. District Court and approximately 235 federal employees.
