Pit bull gets out of yard in Dayton, attacks man

A dog identified as a pit bull attacked a man who was looking for work Tuesday evening and police have ordered the animal quarantined at home for 10 days.

The victim was speaking with a homeowner in the 900 block of Haller Avenue just after 6 p.m. when the dog got out of the back yard and bit the man, Dayton Sgt. Mark Spiers said.

The victim told a News Center 7 videographer he's a tree trimmer and that the dog bit him on his wrist and thumb.

He didn't require a trip to a hospital, but his wounds did require medical treatment at the scene, Spiers said.

Police cited the owner on misdemeanor charges of having an unlicensed dog and failure to control. The owner also will be liable for the victim's medical bills, the sergeant said.

Spiers said as far as police know, they have not had any past incidents involving the dog at the Haller Avenue address.

The owner has been instructed to keep the dog in the home for 10 days as part of the quarantine order, Spiers said.

Spiers said that while he's no dog breeder and no expert on pit bulls, "I just know that they appear to be more aggressive than other dogs."
