Pair accused of looting at tornado victim’s home remain in jail

DAYTON — A Dayton man and woman who were indicted on multiple charges after being accused of looting a tornado victim’s home were arraigned in court today.

A grand jury indicted Cynthia R. Gross, 49, on breaking and entering and possession of cocaine.

Joshua D. Chapman, 27, was indicted on breaking and entering, three counts of forgery and receiving stolen property.

A judge continued bond at $50,000 for both Gross and Chapman.

On June 13, a Memorial Day tornado victim stopped to check on her home in Harrison Twp. when she discovered the suspects in her driveway.

The pair were loading personal items that were inside her home into a pickup truck, according to a prosecutor’s office.

“When I drove by I saw this truck in the driveway. A woman was loading every single last thing in my home into (the truck),” the woman previously told News Center 7. “It was packed to the top.”

The woman said that Gross claimed to be collection items for donations to Goodwill.

“I told her ‘put this back or there’s going to be problems.’ And she started unloading the truck,” the woman said. “That’s when I called the cops.”
