Man in brief standoff in Dayton identified

DAYTON — UPDATE @ 9:22 a.m.:

A man arrested on Stolz Avenue after a standoff Wednesday has been identified as 56-year-old Philmore Basil Alexander III.

He is facing preliminary charges of felonious assault, aggravated menacing, abduction and having weapons while under disability, according to a Dayton police report.

Charges have not been formally filed yet.

Alexander was taken into custody shortly before 3 a.m. and is being held in the Montgomery County Jail.

INITIAL REPORT:

A man was taken into custody after a brief standoff with police early Wednesday morning.

Officers were called to a home in the 900 block of Stolz Avenue just after 1 a.m. because the man would not allow another person to leave, said Lt. Matt Beavers of the Dayton Police Department. When police arrived they noticed the man, whose identity has not been released, had a gun, so they surrounded the house.

Officers attempted for two hours to persuade the man to come out of the home, but he refused, Beavers said. So a SWAT team was called to the scene.

However, before the SWAT team arrived, a relative of the suspect convinced him to come out peacefully, Beavers said.

Both the suspected and the victim were taken into custody questioning. It’s not clear if the suspect has been charged or if he’s in jail.
