Man found guilty in Dayton double stabbing

DAYTON — A Dayton man accused stabbing and robbing two men after luring them into his basement was found guilty Thursday.

Jaryld D. Portis, 47, was convicted of four counts of felonious assault and one count of aggravated robbery.

He was fount not guilty of a second aggravated robbery charge.

Portis’ trial began Monday, Dec. 16, and finished Thursday night around 8 p.m.

He is scheduled to be sentenced Jan. 8.

On Sept. 24, police responded to the 80 block of Pointview Avenue after two people reported suffering severe lacerations.

A victim reportedly told police that the two men came to the house and a person inside began swinging a sharp object at them.

One of the victims was Portis’ landlord, according to a court affidavit.

“Mr. Portis lured the victims to the basement under the guise that there was a problem with a fuse box,” said the affidavit.

While in the basement, he reportedly hit the victims in the head with an unknown object.

One of the victims lost the tip of middle finger during the attack, according to the affidavit.

About $1,100 in rent money was stolen during the incident, according to a police report.

The victims were taken to Miami Valley Hospital in critical condition.

The following morning, an officer attempted a traffic stop near Helena Street and Riverside Drive. The suspect, later identified as Portis, refused to stop.

Police used stop sticks to end the chase, and took Portis into custody after he tried to flee on foot.
