UPDATE @ 7:45 a.m.:

Police said a woman shot a man in self-defense after he entered her home on Richmond Avenue in Dayton Wednesday morning.

Officers and medics were dispatched to the 200 block of Richmond Avenue around 4:10 a.m. after a man was reported shot.

Dayton Police Homicide Division Supervisor Sgt. Richard Blommel said the woman inside the home first called police after hearing a man attempting to break into a second story window. Blommel said the man made entry through the window and confronted the woman before she shot him in self-defense.

After being shot, police said the man fled back out the same window and ran for about a block before collapsing in the 300 block of Richmond Avenue.

The man was transported to Miami Valley Hospital with at least one gunshot wound, but police would not release his condition or specify how many times he was shot.

Blommel said the woman is currently being questioned by police but charges against her are not expected.

“You have a right to protect yourself if you fear for the safety of yourself and or your family,” Blommel said.

Police are not sure if there is any connection between the shooting victim and the woman. Blommel said it appears the man was unarmed when he broke into the home.

Dayton police continue to investigate the incident.
