Dayton stabbing suspect charged, arrested after police chase

DAYTON — A Dayton man arrested in a police chase Wednesday morning is also facing charges in a double stabbing in Dayton earlier this week.

Jaryld D. Portis, 47, was charged with four counts of felonious assault and two counts of aggravated robbery, according to Dayton Municipal Court records.

On Tuesday, police and medics were dispatched to the 80 block of Pointview Avenue in Dayton on a report of a double stabbing.

One of the victim’s was Portis’ landlord, according to a court affidavit.

“Mr. Portis lured the victims to the basement under the guise that there was a problem with a fuse box,” said the affidavit.

Once in the basement, he reportedly hit both victims in the head with an unknown object.

During the incident, one of the victims lost the tip of his middle finger and both victims suffered severe lacerations, according to the affidavit.

The victims both identified Portis as their attacker.

They were taken to Miami Valley Hospital in critical condition.

As of Friday afternoon, they were not listed as patients at the hospital, according a Miami Valley Hospital spokesperson.

Approximately $1,100 in rent money was stolen in the incident, according to the police report.

Around 1:40 a.m. Wednesday, an officer learned he was near a car connected to an aggravated robbery.

When the officer attempted a traffic stop near Helena Street and Riverside Drive, the suspect, later identified as Portis, refused to stop.

Police started a chase and used stop sticks to end the chase, according to the affidavit.

Portis ran from the scene on foot and into the Great Miami River, where police caught him, said the affidavit.

A female passenger in the car was also taken into custody, but is not clear if she is facing any charges.

Portis reportedly denied any involvement in the double stabbing.

Bond was set at $100,000 for Portis Thursday, according to court records.
