Apartments in Greene County evacuated after partygoers cause ceiling to buckle

Fairborn fire officials are investigating after partygoers caused the ceiling of a second-floor apartment to buckle and cause structural damage at an apartment complex near Wright State University this week.

Two Greene County sheriff’s deputes who responded to a noise complaint at The Province apartments, Zink and Kauffman roads, called for firefighters when they noticed the damage about 2 a.m. Sunday, fire officials said.

There was a party in a third-floor apartment and the weight of the crowd caused the structural support of the apartment’s floor to break, officials said.

Thursday, News Center 7’s John Bedell said he learned from someone who attended the party that there were 70 to 80 people in the apartment.

As a result, the ceiling of the second-floor apartment buckled and caused drywall to break, and the building was evacuated, officials said.

“(Firefighters) determined we (had) a hazard here, a structural issue with the building,” Fairborn Fire Division Chief David Reichert said.

“The lieutenant on scene made a good decision and evacuated all occupants of that side of the apartment complex. So they got everybody out from the third floor, second floor and first floor.”
