Dayton woman sentenced to prison in skillet attack

DAYTON — A Dayton woman accused of attacking her boyfriend with a skillet and dragging him outside by his foot has been sentenced to five years in prison, according to court records.

Vanessa N. Canty pleaded guilty to an attempted murder charge earlier this  month, read Montgomery County Common Pleas Court documents.

Two counts of felonious assault and and one count of domestic violence were dismissed.

Canty received jail time credit for 132 days served and was also sentenced to five years probation, according to court documents.

She was facing three to 11 years in prison.

On March 14, Canty’s boyfriend woke up after a night of drinking together in a pool of his own blood, according to a court affidavit.

“[He] asked Vanessa if she did this to him, to which she replied, ‘I should have killed you,’” read court documents.

While in bed, the pair reportedly got into a physical fight and Canty kicked him out of bed.

She hit the man, who was too intoxicated to stand, with a cast iron skilled multiple times and poured a jug of water into his nose, read court documents.

Canty reportedly told investigators that he wasn’t very responsive and that shr dragged him outside by his foot.

She locked him out of the house, but then let him inside when she heard him calling her.

Canty told investigators that the man assaulted her, “but appeared to only have old injuries,” according to the court affidavit.

The man was taken to the hospital and treated for a brain bleed and multiple broken bones and cuts.
