Dayton woman pleads guilty in skillet attack on boyfriend

DAYTON — A 41-year-old Dayton woman accused of hitting her boyfriend with a skillet and pouring water into his nose pleaded guilty.

Vanessa Canty pleaded guilty to attempted murder Monday, according to Montgomery County court records.

Two felonious assault charges and a domestic violence charge were dismissed.

She is scheduled to be sentenced July 23.

Canty faces three to 11 years in prison, but is eligible for probation.

In March, Canty’s boyfriend woke up after a night of drinking with her in a pool of his own blood, according to a court affidavit.

“[He] asked Vanessa if she did this to him, to which she replied, ‘I should have killed you,’” read court documents.

Canty reportedly told investigators that he assaulted her, but “but appeared to only have old injuries,” according to the affidavit.

They reportedly got into a fight and Canty kicked him out of bed. She hit him with a cast iron skillet multiple times and poured a jug of water into his, according to court documents.

When she woke up the next day she realized how badly she injured him,” read court documents.

The man was taken to the hospital with a brain bleed, multiple fractures and lacerations.
