Dayton Officer Shot: Chief Biehl tells community Detective Del Rio has died

Dayton police Detective Jorge Del Rio, serving as part of a DEA task force, was shot and wounded in Dayton on Monday night.

Here’s what we know:

• Detective Jorge Del Rio, 55, is on advanced life support
• He was shot in the face just before 7 p.m. Monday in the 1400 block of Ruskin Road
• Detective Del Rio, part of a DEA task force, was serving a drug-related warrant
• He remains in critical condition at Grandview Medical Center
• 3 people are in federal lockup or county jail, Police Chief Richard Biehl said.
• Federal charges are filed against 3, including the suspected shooter
• Courtney Allen, who was originally arrested, not facing federal charges
• Police seized 9 kilos of fentanyl, up to 60 pounds of marijuana, $51,000 cash from the house

Dayton police Detective Jorge Del Rio, shot and wounded during a DEA task force warrant service Monday night on Ruskin Road, remains in Grandview Medical Center.

The Dayton Police Department, issued an update on the officer Tuesday evening, who is on “advanced life support.” His condition is described as grave:

“Again, please keep him and his family in your thoughts, prayers, and care,” department officials said in the tweet.

Del Rio was serving as part of a federal task force when he was shot and wounded at a house in the 1400 block of Ruskin Road in Dayton.

Two law enforcement sources said that the detective was shot at the house as part of a federal Drug Enforcement Administration task force that was serving a warrant.

“We’re serving a warrant with the DEA. We need a medic,” an officer told a 9-1-1 dispatcher.

Fellow officers loaded Del Rio in a police cruiser and drove the officer to Grandview Medical Center due to the severity of his injuries, police said.

“Today is a very difficult day for the Dayton Police Department and our federal partners,” the chief said Monday night.

“As we move forward tonight, please keep this officer, his family, our department, the DEA, and the entire community in your thoughts, prayers, and care,” he said.

Five people who were in the house on Ruskin Road were taken in custody.

“Everybody who was in that structure is in custody,” Biehl said.

Four of the people taken into custody are adult males. The fifth is a juvenile.

The DEA task force recovered a large amount of fentanyl, cash and weapons from the house, Biehl said.

Four people arrested at the house on Ruskin Road were booked into Montgomery County Jail early Tuesday morning. The four men are Nathan S. Goddard Jr., 39; Courtney L. Allen, 34; Cahke W. Cortner Sr., 39; and Lionel L. Combs III, 40.

Allen was released from jail at a later time and is not facing federal charges,according to a spokesperson.

Goddard is accused of assaulting a federal officer with a deadly weapon, conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute more than 400 grams of fentanyl and 500 grams of more of cocaine and marijuana, according to the Southern District of Ohio U.S. attorney’s office.

Cortner and Combs are also facing conspiracy to possess and distribute drugs.

All three are facing possible life sentences.

Biehl said the police department’s Bureau of Professional Standards will handle part of the administrative investigation related to the Dayton police officers who were on scene.
