Should Ohioans vote on ‘checks and balances’ in health orders?

COLUMBUS — Rep. Larry Householder, R- Glenford, a former House Speaker, proposed Thursday that Ohio voters consider a measure on the ballot to allow state lawmakers to override any executive order issued by the governor’s office.

If it reaches the ballot, the question would be before voters in the May, 2022 primary election.

It comes in response to multiple orders from Gov. Mike DeWine, ranging from the statewide mask mandate, to continued limitations on businesses.

In a written statement issued Thursday, Householder said the measure is needed to return “checks and balances” to the Statehouse, allowing lawmakers to modify or terminate any order from the governor. Unlike previous bills from the Legislature that set up a special committee to consider the governor’s emergency health orders, this proposal puts the matter into the hands of the entire House and Senate, giving them the ability to reject the order from the governor with a simple majority vote.

Householder’s plan would require voters to amend the state constitution, giving more power to the Legislature and taking it away from the governor.

Householder had been Speaker until his indictment on federal corruption charges, which are still pending. He remains a member of the Ohio House and continues to attend House sessions.
