Coronavirus: Will kids get to attend summer camp this year?

DAYTON — Summer break from school for a lot of kids means summer camp, but many parents are wondering if their kids will get to go this year.

“It’s kind of on hold right now,” said Leslie Mosley of Challenge Island Dayton, a stem-based camp for kids.

News Center 7’s Kayla Courvell spoke with camp organizer Leslie about the possibilities of summer camps being open this year.

Challenge Island Dayton typically has 200 kids during the summer, but that may not happen this year.

“(We’re) trying to wait to see if we can hold summer camps,” said Leslie.

The camps, which focus on science, technology, engineering, art and math, are normally held at the Get Air trampoline park in Huber Heights and Miamisburg; however, the parks remain closed.

“Since they’re closed and we haven’t heard on when they’ll open, we haven’t really planned any summer camps,” Leslie said.

If summer camp cannot be held this year, kids will be able to log online and interact with their teacher and other kids while doing steam challenges from home, said Leslie.

The At-Home Challenge Island back-up plan will allow for children to socialize.

“It (camp) really focuses on their social emotional learning, just learning how to cooperate and learning how to work together, so there might be a lot of catch-up this fall, but how knows what this fall will look like,” Leslie said.

The camp is also waiting to hear from the Ohio Health Department on whether they can start planning camps as preparing will be a lot different.

“I can’t see a bunch of first and second graders wearing masks and social distancing, but I guess we have to see what happens," said Leslie. “But we’d have to do a lot more disinfecting and we’d have to use a lot of new materials. We usually like to recycle.”
