Coronavirus: Daycares begin prepping to reopen while waiting for approval

Daycares are waiting for the state’s plans to reopen as many begin to go back to work.

Governor DeWine was originally planning on announcing the plan for daycares on Monday before delaying to ensure proper safety.

“I think what we owe you is a good answer and we’re going to get that, but we’re not quite there yet,” explained DeWine.

News Center 7′s Sean Cudahy spoke with workers, staff, and families at Mini University about the unclear future.

Mini University’s president, Julie Thorner, spoke about the uncertainty everyone is feeling.

“It’s been a challenging time that’s for sure,” said Thorner.

Thorner was disappointed when DeWine did not make an announcement.

“Disappointment, disappointment. I appreciate that he’s in a tough position and has a lot of decisions that are important to make, but the waiting is challenging... even if all of the details weren’t worked out, but people knew that June first was realistic, or June 15th was realistic, and then the details could follow that would be enough I think just to give people some hope….and a sense of calm,” said Thorner.

That same concern is prevalent even on WHIO’s own facebook page with one user saying, “I might lose my job because I’m not going to leave a 3 year old at home while I work since I don’t have child care.”

Thorner expects that when the day care reopens, it will be with smaller class sizes, tables spaced farther apart, and lots of handwashing.
