Reid Health swears in first officers for its new police department

RICHMOND, INDIANA — Reid Health swore in its new police chief and the brand-new departments first three officers Thursday. The transition of the health network’s security department to a police department took a big step with the ceremony.

Last month, Reid Health announced it would become like many other health systems in Indiana that have started to transition their security departments to state-recognized police departments.

Reid Health President/CEO Craig Kinyon led the oath to swear in four men who bring more than 100 years of combined law enforcement experience to the table with their new department.

Randy Kolentus, the new Chief of Police for Reid Health, retired from the Richmond Police Department as a Captain with more than 28 years of service with RPD.

Former Wayne County, Indiana, Sheriff Jeff Cappa is now the Assistant Chief for Reid Health. Cappa retired from the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office in January 2019 after serving two terms as the county’s chief law enforcement officer for two terms. Cappa has a 38-year career in law enforcement under his belt.

Captain Dennis Perkins served the Connersville Police Department in Wayne County for 20 years – serving as assistant chief and chief for that department.

Lastly, Officer/Training Officer Steve Smith spent 21 years with the Richmond Police Department.

Reid Health said in a press release that the transition to a police force will mean more training and certifications for its security team in Richmond and Connersville. Reid also said the first group of officers will go to the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy to start training in July. Because of limited space at that academy, Reid Health said it could take up to three years to complete the transition.
